Pure tungsten electrode, also known as wolfram electrode. It can be manufactured with black surface, polished surface or ground surface.
Pure tungsten electrode (EWP) are basically unalloyed; it contain a minimum of 99.5% wt -% tungsten and has a very high work function. So arc starting becomes more difficult than other tungsten electrode and keeping the stable arc are not easy and it has a shorter life since we weld the metals like aluminum and magnesium. However as known to all these electrodes are the most economical and are considered good for general purpose welding. We have to be noted that the pure tungsten electrode can be only used in AC welding, however; better alternatives are available.Pure tungsten electrode is generally used in the welding of aluminum and magnesium alloys (AC).
These electrodes form a clean, balled tip when heated and provide great arc stability for AC welding with a balanced wave. Pure tungsten also provides good arc stability for AC sine wave welding, especially on aluminum and magnesium. It is not typically used for DC welding because it does not provide the strong arc starts associated with thoriated or ceriated electrodes.
